* an Adult woman who wants to be able to defend herself, or...
* A Parent looking for a self-defense program for your child
I can't stress this point enough, because, unlike most other things in your life...
... your life, or the life of someone you love, could literally depend on the choice you make.
You and I both know that the world has its fair share of people with barely enough knowledge, skill, and common sense to be doing what they do, let alone teaching anybody else. You prbably know a few of these people yourself. And, believe me, the same holds true when it comes to martial arts and so-called, self-defense experts.
This is not to say that a karate instructor with a xxth degree black belt cannot defend him or herself. But, who would you trust your life to...
... someone who has learned the skills they possess for use in a game - for the purpose of earning a belt or trophy, or...
... someone who has actual life experience in surviving real-world attacks from real-world assailants - someone who had to really make sure that what they were learning would work to save their own life - not in a rule-laden contest with referees to make sure everything was fair?
We both know the answer to that, yes?
Other Considerations for Girls and Women's Self-Defense
Here is a partial list of some other major differences between self defense for men and women.
* Cultural Influences - girls have been taught from a very early age that fighting was not "lady-like."
Oh no! What would people think of her!
* Situational Self-Defense - rape and sexual assault are two of the biggest differences between the genders when it comes to suriviving an attack.
The fact that men are usually dealing with the more competitive ("oh-yeah! let's go!"-type of fighting come to mind). Men are usually attacked with the goal of "finishing" the victim in mind. While women, and more often young girls, however, are forced to deal with what we might call subtle tactics like date-rape or being ambushed by a group of young male attackers. Wher men are pummelled, women are typically attacked with the intent to "conquer" or dominate.
Add to this the strength differential discussed earlier, and you have a very different situation, requiring very different self-protection tactics.
* Incorrect Information - I believe that the majority of teachers and instructors mean well. They aren't out to con you. It's just that...
... most of these people have no real experience themselves to go on, so they end up doing what everyone else does when they don't know any better...
... they make, what to them are, logical and rational assumptions or look to others who seem to know the answer.
The difference here is that we're talking about self-protection...
... real-world self-defense for women...
...girl's self-defense that works. Not...
... baking a cake, where, if you don't get it right the first time, you can just toss it in the trash can and start over.
A mistake in a women's self-defense situation, in any situation requiring defense against an attack, could be very, very costly indeed.
