Reality-Based Women's Self-Defense Program - What to Look For

* an adult woman looking to be able to defend herself, or...
* a concerned parent who wants your daughter to be safe in an often unsafe world
This point cannot be emphasized enough, because, like practically nothing else in your life...
... your very life could hang on the choice you make.
Unfortunately, the world is littered with people who are supposed to be knowledgeable, skilled, and wise, but are nowhere close. You've seen it. You probably know a few yourself.
This is not to say that a black belt, martial arts teacher cannot protect him or herself with the skills they've learned. But, which person would you trust your life to if given the choice...
... a person who has practiced their skills for use in a game for the purpose of earning a belt or trophy, or...
... someone who has direct life experience in actually surviving real attacks from real assailants and had to make sure that what they were learning would work to save their own life?
I think we both know the answer to that question.
Some Other Considerations for a Good Self-Defense Program for Women and Teen Girls
What follows is a partial list outlining some of the other factors that are major differences in what men and women each have to deal with in a self-defense situation.
* Cultural Influences - in our culture, at least, women are taught from early childhood that physical fighting was not appropriate for "good-girls."
Oh my god! What would people think!
* Situational Attack-Defense - two of the most obvious differences for women that men generally don't have to worry about are rape and sexual assault.
The fact that men are usually dealing with the more obvious situations (muggings and competitive ("oh-yeah! let's go!"-type fighting come to mind). While women, and more and more young girls, are required to deal with subtle tactics like date-rape or being ambushed by a group.
Combine this with the strength difference that I discuss in my books and other articles, and it becomes easy to see that women have a very different situation, which requires equally different self-defense tactics and strategies.
* Wrong Information - I think that most martial arts and self-defense teachers and instructors mean well. They aren't out to take advantage of you. I think it's just that...
... these people lack the fundamental, real-world experience to go on - they don't know any better - and end up in a blind-leading-the-blind kind of situation.
... they act on assumptions and ideas that, to them at least, appear to be logical based on their own limited understanding of what a real attack is like.
The problem is that we're talking about self-protection here...
... self-defense for women and teen girls...
... reliable self-protection strategies for effective self-defense for women. Not...
... baking a cake, where, if you do it wrong, it won't kill you.
A mistake in a women's self-defense situation, in any situation requiring defense against an attack, could be very, very costly indeed.
