Bed and breakfasts aren't just fascinating examples of architectural history, they boast unique guest lists, filled with every type of personality one can imagine. Some are people who have entertained us to those who founded the very county we call home to even those with a more notorious fame.
While some can boast of a famous guest or two, the John Rutledge House Inn in Charleston, S.C., has to be one of the most impressive historic bed and breakfasts. Its namesake not only served as the first governor of South Carolina, but as a Supreme Court Justice, as well. He also was one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution. If fact, he help co-write the Constitution, and first drafts of the precious document were written in the inn's ballroom. Oh, by the way, George Washington once dined there, as well. The innkeepers preserve and honor this history with the inn's its period dcor, antiques and carefully chosen reproductions.
Some of the United States' most influential writers were among the notable guests as the Vichy Hot Springs Resort & Inn in Ukiah, Calif. Samuel Clemens (a.k.a Mark Twain) and Jack London enjoyed a stay and a soak in the hot springs, as well as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Theodore Roosevelt. An illustrious guest list, to be sure, and you can still soak the same restoring waters as guests have been enjoying for more than a century and a half.
Hacienda del Sol, an 1810 adobe home outside of Taos, N.M. has a rich and varied history. It once catered to young girls as a college preparatory school, with such notable surnames as Vanderbilt and Pillsbury. In the 1920s, owner Mable Dodge Luhan, a famous patron of the arts, hosted such notable guests as D.H. Lawrence and Georgia O'Keefe. In the late 1940s, Hacienda del Sol opened as a guest ranch and catered to such celebrities as Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and John Wayne.
Several presidents have stayed at The Colonel Taylor Inn B&B and Gift Shop in Cambridge, Ohio. Among them was one of Colonel Joseph Taylor's personal friends, William McKinley. James Garfield and Rutherford Hayes also are said to have visited the home. Colonel Taylor is an interesting historic figure. During the Civil War, he served in the Battle of Fredericksburg and is said to have advised General Burnside against the attack on General Lee. As it turned out , the battle was one of the Union's most tragic defeats. After serving his country as a soldier and officer, Colonel Taylor also served four terms as a congressman.
At The General Lewis, a stagecoach that once delivered travelers to the springs on the James River and Kanawha Turnpike, rests under an arbor. Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson registered at this 1834 inn's walnut desk, which was retrieved from an old hot springs resort in the area.
Any of these historic bed and breakfasts stand alone on their hospitality, amenities and beauty, but it's hard to deny the added ambiance of staying in a place where some of the most illustrious names of the past worked, relaxed, dined and slept.
