It is well established that a dog is a pack animal that likes to live in a group. It not only enjoys the advantages that a pack has over an individual but it also needs to live in a group to express it's social instincts. When a dog or puppy comes into your home it is essentially joining a pack where you or the leader of the family is the pack leader. The dog looks for guidance on how to act from the pack leader. It is the responsibility of the pack leader to teach the dog how to behave and to enforce these rules once they have been taught. This is where obedience training comes into the equation. Obedience training is not cruel or a subversion of a dogs true instincts. A dog wants to conform and wants to learn what you teach it.

So what do you want to teach it ? Well, many people don't commit to obedience training and teach their dogs a few things but don't really follow through with the training or then vacillate on enforcing the rules. However you need to establish a few rules. Here are the essential skills you need to teach your dog in order to control it and for your pet to live comfortably in a human world.

It should be able to socialize with humans and other animals (principally the family and pets like other dogs and cats) in it's home.

It must be trusting of people and be comfortable being touched by humans.

It should learn to control any aggressive instincts.

It should be accepting of restraint. An example being that it can walk on a lead calmly without pulling or getting excited by everything that comes into it's view.

It should react to your calls like coming when you call for it.

It should relieve itself in a specific area that is set by you.

It should be able to be alone for a length of time every now and then.

By learning these skills your dog will fit into the human world and will be a productive and cherished member of your family.

Sit Stay Fetch is an obedience training course that will help you to teach your pet all these skills and a few more besides. It covers all these basics skills in an easy to understand method. It also gives you are plan to put the commands into practice and teaches a few more advanced obedience commands.

The centerpiece of the course is the sit stay fetch course book. This is a content packed e-book that aims to teach you the psychology of dealing with a dog " how to understand what the dog is thinking. This is important because although you need some techniques to teach the dog obedience you also need a reference point to put the training in context. It also covers many dog behavioral traits - some good and some bad. It explains why a dog acts like this and how to teach them to stop the bad behaviors.

The next section of the book is teaching the obedience commands. I think this is done well. For each command it is broken down into steps. Each step has a photograph and text that explains what you must do. For each command there are 4 or 5 photos and text that effectively communicate what to do. After looking at a command and trying it a few times you will have soon memorized it and be teaching your dog. The commands feature all the essential commands that you need and a few more advanced commands. There are a few extra e-books that come with the total package. They cover topics like grooming your dog and training it for security work. An additional book that is really useful is on how to become a pack leader. For me this is an important lesson to learn as it will underpin all the training that you do with your dog in the future.

The main course also comes as mp3 files. This means you can load them into your ipod or copy them to cd and listen to them whenever you like. For the commands, you can listen to them as you are training your dog which is really useful.

The whole package can be downloaded and you can be using it in about 30 minutes.
