Shih Tzu: A Dog That Takes Your Heart

 Add2Netvouz
While choosing a small dog breed, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration and one of them is the looks. The Shih Tzu has the look that will make you take him back home with you. When those imploring eyes are going to look straight at you, you will feel weakened in your knees.

Known as the lion dog of Tibet, Shih Tzu in spite of his small size has a big heart and can display courage like no other small dog breed. One of the greatest things about this small dog is that he is a fur ball that is so full of energy that the energy instead of dissipating spreads on to everyone who touches him or plays with him. Adorable and affectionate, they need love and they give love.

A Shih Tzu likes to feel important and loved and hence will do every antic in the dog book to get your attention and to even make you laugh when you are depressed. Historically speaking, the Shih Tzu is a mix of Bei-jing gou and the Lhasa Apso. He is also known as the chrysanthemum dog because his face resembles that of a chrysanthemum. The origins of the Shih Tzu can be traced as far back as ten thousand years ago.

Compatibility and Usage: Shih Tzus are toy dogs and belong to the non-sporting group. As such they are very good as family dogs and are comfortable in a family situation. They do not need too much exercise unlike the bigger dogs. They like children tremendously and are a very alert watch dog. With their playful and lively disposition, the Shih Tzu needs to be with people although they behave quietly with other pets. Full of character, the Shih Tzu behaves in a royal manner which borders on the arrogant. They easily make friends and respond well to patient training.

Physical Appearance: The Shih Tzu has a long, flowing double coat that needs to be cleaned and taken care of once every 5 weeks. Some Shih Tzu's have a lot of hair they are unlike the fur that some of the other dog breeds have. They will loose most of their hair during grooming. The height of the male Shih Tzu can vary from 9 to 10 inches but will never be less than 8 inches. The weight of an adult dog will be between 9 to 16 pounds.

Temperament: The Shih Tzu is very observant and animated and behaves in a stately manner although it can also be very stubborn. Since they bark incessantly when strangers are around, they also make a good watch dog. They totally enjoy the attention and babying they get from their owners and children. They can provide hours of fun and enjoyment for children and all members of the family.

Caring & Health: Shih Tzus have a tendency to wheeze and snore. They are prone to ear, eye, respiratory problems and spinal disc disease due to their long back and short legs. They require regular dental care and should never be overfed as they gain weight easily. They have a life span from 11 to 14 years. These little dogs need daily grooming and care in the ear passages and eye area. They shed very little hair and are therefore recommended for allergy suffers.

As a family dog, the Shih Tzu will surely liven up any home especially if you live in the city or a small house. Choosing a Shih Tzu will surely be one of the best decisions you have made.
