So what are the official hand signals for dog obedience training? The truth of the matter is that there are no official hand signals for training a dog. There are some hand signals that are used more frequently by dog trainers, but no specific standards have been approved or created. This might leave the dog owner with freedom to use their imagination freely, when it comes to using dog hand signals. There are some hand signals for dogs that are used more often than others. When you start training your dog to sit using hand signals, the first thing you need to do is to place your arm at your side, and then move your hand toward your chest facing your palm down.
Next is to teach your dog to understand stay with your arms coming straight in front of your dog with your palm extended forward. You can then try to make some orders to stay by gradually extending your arm and your hand perpendicular with the palm right next to your pet's nose without any form of contact.
Make certain to stop your dog at once if he tries to snuffle your hand, when you are giving him the stay command, but do it in a firm but kind way. To train your dog the down command, you need to place your arm curved at the elbow and perpendicular to the floor, then with your palm facing down and parallel to the floor give the down command. Some dogs might resist the down command. For dogs to go down on the floor means to lower their guard, and some are just not comfortable with that. Also, remember you might need to teach the dog what the down commands mean, before he can do it.
There is a great benefit to using hand signals for training dogs, especially if added to the already familiar verbal commands. The dog will be familiar with the hand gestures and will expect them from you when you are training them. When you use dog hand signals in addition to verbal commands the dog's comprehension will increase and it will make the training of your dog a lot easier, and therefore faster. Once the pet get used to the hand signals and associates it with the right action he will follow the commands more consistently and therefore learn faster.
It's as well better to know that whenever you want your pet to learn while enjoying the hand signals training, presenting them with a treat or some other form of praise will be a motivating and inciting agent for your pet to do good. Nevertheless, if your dog purposely declines to abide by your commands, physical punishment isn't the answer. Positive reinforcement should be the primary mode of heightening your pet's good behavior.
Once your pet does well with the basic dog training hand signals then he might be ready to get more advanced training and perform more complicated duties.
