Forget whatever misconceptions you might have. You only need to ensure that your meta tags are done write, you have great content and you have many quality links pointing to your site. So how do you get those links?
1. Perhaps one of the best and easiest ways is submitting articles to article directories. These sites have been around for some time and have built search engine love. Best of all, all it will cost you are the time and effort in writing and submitting your article.
The strongest advantage of article submission, from a link-building point of view, is that you determine your anchor text. You decide what your anchor text says and this means that you decide which keywords you get ranked for.
Don't just submit one article to one directory and think you're done. Keep submitting articles at least once a week to as many article sites as you can find.
Bear in mind that you need to ensure you use the right tools and strategy if you want to get the most from this. For example, you need to ensure that each instance of your article on each article directory is unique. There are tools and services that take care of this and your article submissions.
2. You can start blogs that are related in theme to your main site. Since your blogs are different webpages from your main site, links from them will help you increase your main site's link popularity.
The good thing about blogging is that you can start right away. Just go to blogger.com or wordpress.com and set up a free account. Post information on your area of interest (which should be relevant to your main site) and get one way links.
Do you have to start a blog to build links with them? No. You can easily build many high quality links if you make useful comments on other people's blog. Just make sure they "do follow" and that you link back to your site.
3. Make sure you bookmark your articles on sites like digg.com and del.icio.us. Also give your visitors the opportunity of bookmarking your articles. These are quality links to your site.
Furthermore, it makes saving and sharing your content a lot easier. With so many social bookmarking sites out there, you can get high quality links to your site since most of them are sites that are highly respected by Google.
4. Submit your site to web directories. Some will review your site for free and include you if you meet their standards. Others will charge a fee.
If you must submit your site to only one directory, then make it Dmoz.org. A link from this site is worth a lot. However, you'll do yourself much good by submitting to as many web directories as will give you a rank boost (And they are many).
You'll get a bigger rank boost from the established and respected directories. But that said, links from good niche directories will also give you links that will add up in your favor.
There are services and software that will help you submit your site to many directories. Depending on the demand on your time, this may be a very viable option.
5. Forum posting is one great way of getting high quality links to your site. For your own good, make sure you post useful comments and articles with a link back to your site. Spamming forums won't help you.
The methods discussed are NOT the only ways to get links back to your site. However, they are some of the most cost effective. If you implement all of them diligently, you'll soon start getting oodles of free high quality traffic.
