Most people are aware of speed traps, although they pay little respect to them and drive in blissful ignorance! Unfortunately, this attitude isn't helpful because the rate of increase of speeding traps and speed cameras is growing - and growing fast! Speeding offences is a big revenue earner for the government, which you shouldn't forget.
To understand speed camera detectors, you should understand a bit about the technologies involved. Current speed cameras are of various natures. The most common type (the Gatso) is a type of speed detector that emits a laser burst against a vehicle. The returned signal tells the speed camera how fast the vehicle is travelling. Similarly, there are radar burst speed cameras that use bursts of radar to do the same thing. Some speed cameras use two cables stretched across the highway to detect a vehicles speed. When a vehicle hits the cables, the speed can be determined and the speed camera notified. The last common speed camera utilizes time stamped photos to determine a vehicles speed. It takes a picture of the vehicle on two spots on the road and then compares the time stamp.
Worried and concerned? Well, that's probably a fair understanding right now. There are a multitude of technologies out there just looking for potential speeding offenders. The wise consideration is to purchase a speed camera detector, its a good investment.
The different manufacturers of speed camera detectors use differing technologies, which is evolving. Some manufacturers use a combination of laser and radar detection technology, and others use a global/UK database, or as an addition. The best devices, as you can probably guess, use a combination of both. The buying decision largely comes down to your budget.
And motorists should be excited about the future of speed camera traps. While some consider speed camera traps dubious and maybe even against the law, it is currently perfectly legal to own and use a speed camera detector. In fact, many people encourage having them because those who own them tend to be more conscious of their speed and are less likely to be in an accident. In this sense, a speed camera detector is a great thing to have and might even save your life!
There is some legislation that is being considered to limit radar jamming devices, but the future of all other types of speed camera detectors is not in question. So you should feel perfectly comfortable fighting against speed camera traps with your very own little speed camera detector friend. When purchasing a speed camera detector, keep in mind that there are often yearly fees with the types that update the speed camera database. It is a small price to pay for staying in the loop whenever new speed cameras are installed.
If you were buying a new PDA today, would you buy a regular one - or one with GPS navigation built in, and with a speed trap detector built in too? The reality is that as technology has evolved, it is now more accessible in lots of different equipment, including PDA's and mobile phones. If I had a device that could do all this, and warn me when I've broken the speed limit, I'd know what I'd buy!
If you already have one of these devices that informs you of your speed, when you've taken a wrong turn and when you're approaching a speed trap, then you'll know just how good they are. If you haven't got one, ask someone that has if they could survive without it now.
So the answer to the title of this article is simple. You should never feel guilty about using a speed camera detector. In fact, you should feel anxious to get one because it may very well be a life saver for you both for your pocket book and to reduce the risk of you having an accident. With the roads of the UK slowly being stocked with those watchdog speed cameras, it is only fitting that you arm yourself to the teeth with your own high-tech defense.
