Do Criminals Know The Law Better Than You Do?
She had a huge yard for her kids to play. She decided to purchase a weapon to protect her family. She chose a small caliber handgun. She always kept it secure and safely away from the children. She learned all she could about handling that type of weapon. She did not expect any trouble but she wanted to be prepared.
One night when the kids were all asleep she heard a noise. She grabbed her gun and cell phone and went to investigate. She quietly sneaked to the area where she heard the noise. She saw a burglar going through her things. He must have come in through the window that was left open. She drew her gun and decided to approach him.
She said put your hands up and turn around or I will shoot. The burglars said take it easy and put up his hands and slowly turned around. She said do not move. I am going to call the police. She called the police. The burglar must have known it would take the police a few minutes to get there.
He said go ahead, shoot me and started walking toward Beth. She said I am not kidding I will shoot you. He said no you want because I am unarmed. If you shoot me, you will go to jail for murder in this state. Beth was a little puzzled and paused to think. That is when the burglar knocked the gun out of her hand. He grabbed it and pointed at her.
He said I should kill you but if I get caught I will go to jail for life. At that moment he heard a siren in the distance. He turned and left with the gun through the window he came in. Beth was so shaken up that she moved. She reported her gun as being stolen. She could not help wondering if the burglar was right about the law. She researched it. He was exactly right. Beth thought, man what a crummy law.
Most criminals are repeat offenders. They are thoroughly familiar with the justice system and individual state laws. The average citizen is ignorant of most laws. They do not understand the law like criminals who have been in and out of jail most of their life.
Some criminals spend years in prison, and are afforded the opportunity to educate themselves on the law and other subjects at your expense. Many are never reformed, but are able to use their newfound knowledge against citizens. They are thoroughly familiar with sentencing. They also know what will get the victim in trouble.
They know the loopholes that will keep them out jail. They also know what will put the innocent victim in jail. The justice system is full of laws that protect the criminal and make it difficult for citizens to defend themselves. Many states are starting to realize that laws are meant to protect citizens not criminals. They are making appropriate changes. Until then you must always have a plan to defend yourself if necessary.
