Rick was a local carpenter. He made a decent living fixing houses in the local area. He had a girl friend named Michelle. Rick did not know as much about Michelle as he wanted. They had been only dating for a couple of weeks. He knew that she was a local girl and figured, she was all right. He did not want to stoop to prying even though he had a vested interest in doing so.

He felt that he would know all he needed to know in time. Rick spent lots of his time in a shed in his backyard. It was a workshop where he made furniture as a hobby. One evening he decided to go out to his shop and finish a table he had been working on for a friend. As he was walking out of the house, the phone rang. It was Michelle and she sounded a little strange.

She said, she just called to see if he was all right. Rick said yes and did not think much else about it. He went back outside toward his shop to finish the table. As he was approaching the shop, a man jumped from
behind the shed and said, whats up Rick? Rick said who are you and what are you doing in my yard? The guy said I going to teach you a lesson. He grabbed an ax leaning up against the shed and took a swung at Rick.

He managed to get out of the way just in time. At that time, there was a siren outside the front of Ricks house. It was the police and Michelle. They called for Rick and asked if he was alight. He said yes, but I was just attacked by some guy. The Cops took his statement and thats when all was revealed.

Michelle was married and it was her husband who attacked Rick. Rick was shocked and immediately broke off his relationship with Michelle. Its turns out that Michelle had a history of getting unsuspecting people involved in her marriage. The Husband was arrested for assault.

Rick found a new girlfriend, and he learns as much about her as he can. He is moving on with his life, but still looks over his shoulder for the guy who attacked him.

We all think we know the people we call friends. We do not expect them to have secrets that will get us hurt. The unexpected can happen. People always have things that they do not want to disclose for one reason or another. When other people are involved they should be as open and honest as possible. If a relationship is based on lies the outcome can only be negative.

If you are serious about another person take the time to find out what you are getting into. There is no such thing as a squeaky clean human being. Everyone has some baggage. It becomes a major problem, when the baggage creates a volatile situation for the people involved. If a person is worth knowing they are worth knowing well.

You must have your own criteria, so that you can quickly escape those who do not meet your standards. Have a plan in case things do not go as planned. In short prepare an exit strategy. Also be prepared to defend yourself if the situation turns violent.
